Mark Shotton - Statement

My grandparents, Cath and Derek, have lived in their current home for around thirty-six years and the memories within the house have been fond.  Their daughter Valerie, my mother, was an only child, however the untimely death of their sister-in-law meant great change within the small family.

"Cath was a good friend of hers, she suggested we offered to take the children, so we did.  Julie was 4 months old and Brian was 2 years old, the family was dramatically increased overnight.  Valerie was only seven years old and we wondered how she would react but she loved them both and treated them as her brother and sister."

Nearly every Sunday of my life I have been to my grandparent's home, each week would consist of a family gathering.  Although as the years passed, the numbers grew smaller as family members have moved away, however the tradition of a Sunday has never dropped and continues to this day.

The house has seen four generations of family pass through its door and each generation has its own memories.  Combining contemporary images with those from the family album, this work layers the history of my family within the context of the subject 2 Jonadab Street.
